BRISBANE NEWS - CORBETT HOUSE FEATURE

 Of all the rooms in this six-bedroom Buderim house, it was one of the four bathrooms that caught the eye of judges in the 2011 Abode House of the Year Award, a national competition with six panelists from the building design and architecture industries. The view from the tub says it all. It's on the top level of the house along with a gym, sauna and suspended concrete rooftop terrace.

 The guys from Reitsma and Associates comes to us with an impressive house, the O House boasts innovation in design with its feature central court and attention to detail. Located on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, Australia, the dwelling is perfectly suited to the local climate with its seamless indoor/outdoor nature. Situated on a canal front in an urban Estate the brief was to ensure canal views were exploited.

RENOVATE - DONALDSON PROJECT

 A chance to revisit a past project the Donaldson extension proved to be an exciting challenge taking an old piece of work to the next level, updating it now and for the future. The original homes simplicity was the main inspiration for the additional elements to this extension. The new detached guest pavilion complete with external fireplace and separate courtyard along with updates for the landscaping, pool entertaining area, garage and additional 2 way bathroom were the primary extension elements added to this beachside home.

 Sustainability featured strongly amount many of the winning designs at the recent regional Building Design Association of Queensland awards. Trevor Reitsma from Reitsma and Associates picked up 251-350sq m with the 'O' House, constructed by Ryan Designer Homes and engineered by HR Design Group. The house features an indoor/outdoor seamless transition with the inner court visible from every room in the house.

 The Abode Awards 2011, were recently held at the Crown Casino in Melbourne. The national design competition is open to all designers & architects, across 10 categories. Reitsma and Associates picked up, Winner - Best Small project (Phipps), Runner Up - Best Bathroom (Corbett2) and Finalist - Best Designed Home (O House). The success proves that architecture in South East Queensland has prominent representatives within the field.

 The Reitsma designed O House has been impeccably executed by Sunshine Coast based builders 'Ryan Designer Homes'. The essence of the design is in its 'O' shaped layout with a feature central court complete with a pool. This composition allows for the element of water to be experienced from immediate entry and from all main living areas. Its unique composition of aesthetic characteristics from stone and Australian timbers give this home a raw appeal to what has appropriately been described as a tapestry of the elements.

SUNSHINE COAST HOME MAKES GOOD USE OF STEEL

 Designed by Trevor Reitsma, the brief was to produce a modestly sized, fully functional family home that was sympathetic to the natural contours of the site. The bush setting was to be maximised and the expansive eastern ocean views and northern aspects taken advantage of. The main structure of the house floats above the recessed garage and steps up the site for a 'lightly touching' result that is sympathetic to the bush setting.

 While government, developers, social welfare groups and taskforces bicker about housing affordability, building designers are already taking action…Caloundra’s Reitsma and Associates has won five Building Designers Association of Queensland Awards. What makes the feat more impressive is that the top award on the night went to a Reitsma home that featured less than 250sqm of floor area and cost less than $1100 sqm to build.

 Designers are often asked to achieve the impossible, or so it can seem. Although the site had its limitations, the owners wanted a decent-sized family home with many outdoor living features, including a flat lawn and swimming pool. Suspended concrete slabs enclose the glass-walled living areas of this new house, which was designed to capture ocean views. Designing a bunker-style split-level house ensured there was enough space for it all.

 Inspiration for this project came from the period between 1940 – 1960, when clean, simple lines dominated. Every corner of this home was designed to be enjoyed, providing the home owners and their guests with unparalleled style, spectacular views and open spaces. Single depth living space and a central void allow for constant natural ventilation, not to mention light. The use of artificial lighting is not required until the sun has disappeared.

 The simplicity of shipping containers had always appealed to Trevor Reitsma. The building design had experimented with concepts that drew on their minimalist lines, so when the opportunity arose to design a multi-purpose structure at the back of a residential block in Caloundra in Queensland, he decided to bring his ideas to live with the help of Colorbond steel. Essentially, I created a shipping container cool enough to call home.
